The Strap that made North Yorkshire famous for the "greatest tannings in the British Empire". Nearly two and a half feet long and made of the heaviest reformatory grade leather, this strap will deliver a devastating impact, never to be forgotten by any misbehaving boy or girl. Split into three tails at one end to reduce air resistance, this maximises the time of the impact and the extent of the bruising as the tails strike one slightly after the other and spread apart. Using this strap is like administering three beltings all at once. The shaped handle end makes it easy to grip and control the implement.

Also available in a two-tailed slightly lighter version suitable for Classroom grade punishments.
Hand tawses for maintaining classroom discipline.
Most Teachers and Mothers will require a "personal" implement for summary punishments.
We have some excellent used examples available, all of which have been tested at nearby Hardacre Hall.

Genuine three tail Glasgow tawse. At one time teachers in Glasgow could only use this style of tawse, which was issued by the education authority. The tawse has the following approximate dimensions: 24 1/2" long, 1 9/16" wide, 7/32" thick and weighs 126 grams. It has the makers stamp 'J.G. STEVENSON - GLASGOW' and also has a separate 'GLASGOW' stamp which has a pin hole that goes right through the leather. We think it was manufactured between 1900 and 1920. It is made from dense, supple leather. It has a slight surface cut in the leather at the handle, but this does not detract from the tawse. The width of the tails have not been cut evenly when manufactured, however this is not unusual with this maker.

Genuine two tail Lochgelly tawse, as used by teachers in Scotland to punish and to maintain classroom discipline. Traditionally administered to the hands, and sometimes better known as the belt or the strap. This tawse has the following approximate dimensions: thickness varies between 11/32" and 3/8", 21 1/4" long, and 1 1/4" wide. It has two tails and is made from hard dense leather. Although it has been stored in a folded manner by the teacher, it has no surface cracks. It is stamped 'H' for heavy weight and has the later 1970's makers stamp which reads: The original "LOCHGELLY" made by JOHN J. DICK, Cowdenbeath. At a weight of 170 grams this is the heaviest and thickest tawse that we have auctioned. It is a very good example.
