    Education

Hardacre Hall provides an education to approximately 150 girl boarders. Our girls are divided into the Junior School (ages 9 to 11), Middle School (ages 12 to 14), and Senior School (ages 15 upwards). Each school division has its own dormitory and a Housemistress to take care of the girls' pastoral needs.

At Hardacre Hall we educate our pupils for the roles their parents wish them to attain in later life. We do not believe in permitting our girls to "express themselves". In our experience this only encourages a propensity to Sin and Lust, and we aim to protect them from this danger to their moral health.

    Curriculum

We teach our girls to serve and obey, and our Curriculum encompasses only as much academic teaching as is needed to satisfy the requirements of the Ministry of Schools.

Core Curriculum subjects are: English Language, Mathematics, English Literature, History, Geography, Sciences, and of course, Latin, without which no-one can be fully educated.

We provide extra-curricular lessons in P.E. and Games, Music & Dance, Riding & Deportment, Arts & Crafts, French, and German. In addition, our Establishment Staff provide further lessons in Religious Instruction, Domestic Duties, Office Duties, Marital Duties, and Personal Hygiene.

We believe that our extensive syllabus provides enough material to keep every pupil fully occupied throughout her stay with the School. We are always mindful of the old adage: "The Devil finds work for idle hands"!

    Teaching Methods

    classics 48

The Hardacre method is quite simple. Girls wait quietly in an orderly queue outside their classroom until called in by the Teacher. They stand beside their desks until told to sit by the Teacher. The Teacher writes the topic headings on the blackboard, then gives a short lecture to explain the topic. During the lecture, all girls will sit properly and pay attention, their hands demurely on the desk.

After the lecture, the girls will take out their notebooks and pencils. The Teacher will then dictate a lengthy passage which the girls must write down verbatim. At the end of the lesson, the girls will stand until told to leave by the Teacher.

All girls are required to do Prep in the classroom at the end of the day's lessons. They are required to copy their notes into their fair copybooks and memorise the dictated passages word for word. A scratchy dip pen is supplied for the exercise. The writing must be of good standard without blots or crossings out.

At the next lesson in the same subject, girls must hand in their copybooks as they enter the classroom. The Teacher will usually set a written test on the blackboard, and while this is being attended to, the Teacher will check all the copybooks. Some tests may be verbal, and any girl called upon must stand before speaking. No mistakes are permitted in either copying or tests, and no allowance will be made for differing levels of academic capability. We believe that education is a matter of good character. If a girl wants to learn, she will, and if not, then we have a variety of methods to deal with this in an uncompromising manner.

Good behaviour in class is compulsory. Poor behaviour is not only a distraction to the other pupils who are trying to learn, but more importantly an insult to the Teacher.

Certain girls will receive the privilege of being appointed as Classroom Monitors, and those who show pedagogic talent may be appointed as Pupil Teachers, their duties being to read out the dictation passage. At Hardacre Hall we believe in encouraging the Teachers of tomorrow who will take our philosophy forward into the other schools of the world.

All our Teachers are trained at Dyke House, the Trust's Teacher Training College, to ensure they have sufficient knowledge of strict disciplinary methods before they undertake the teaching of our pupils.

    Domestic Service

All of our girls must take their share of the burden of Domestic Service in the School. We believe they must learn that the purpose of their later lives is to serve others, be that their parents, their husbands, or an employer, and the practical skills that they acquire will be invaluable in their homes or workplaces. Pupils will be assigned to the Housekeeper on a rota basis, and their duties will encompass school cleaning, kitchen duties, laundry duties, grounds tidying, and stables maintenance. Privileged pupils may even be assigned as Personal Miads to the Senior Staff.

Certain pupils will be assigned to special duties outside the school, providing a domestic service at local establishments, the Teaching College, and the homes of our esteemed Governors.

We know that all our girls will be grateful for these opportunites to demonstrate the skills they have acquired through our teaching facilities.

    In The Dormitory

At our School we believe that our mission includes the teaching of correct personal behaviour. By setting down rigid rules for personal conduct we will discourage any propensity to Sin and Lust.

The Dormitory Rules are intentionally strict and will be ruthlessly enforced by the Housemistress.

Girls will make their way to the Dormitory in an orderly fashion at the appropriate time. They will undress to liberty bodices and knicker linings in a modest fashion and make every effort to avoid looking at any other girl in a state of disrobement. They will proceed to the washroom and attend to their ablutions in a modest manner.

Those who need to use the toilets will do so. No doors are provided for the toilets. Pupils who have a need for the toilet during the night will "hold" themselves until the morning. Girls who fail to do this will be punished by the Housemistress and fitted with plastic knickers by Matron.

After their ablutions, the girls will undress completely and change into their regulation pyjamas. They will put away all their clothing in a tidy manner, except their knicker linings. Then they will stand by their beds and hold out their knicker linings. The Housemistress will walk the length of the Dormitory, inspecting every pair. Where necessary, she will instruct a pupil to wear a clean pair on the next day.

The pupils will now make their way quietly to the Main Hall for the Evening Assembly. After this they return to the Dormitory.

If the Housemistress or the Matron or the School Nurse decides that an Intimate Inspection is necessary, the girls will remove their pyjama trousers and fold them neatly on the bed. They are then required to turn and face the ends of their beds, and keeping their legs straight, bend over the bottom rail and press their faces onto their pyjama trousers, their hands clasped firmly behind their necks with their elbows out. They then wait in that position until they are given the individual command, "Open!".

The girls are allowed to brush each other's hair and socialise in their pyjamas for fifteen minutes before they must get into bed for "Lights Out".

The School provides a Regulation position for sleeping, and all our girls must adhere to this for the sake of good Morals. The girl must sleep on her back with her legs firmly together and the sheets and blankets up to her armpits. Her hands must be resting across her chest in the "Sign of the Cross" as taught by Sister Winifred. It is an inviolable School Rule that a girl's hands must be visible at all times so that the Staff may see what they are up to.

No girl may leave her bed during the night. All too soon she will be awakened by the Bell for her early morning run.

    Conclusion

We at the Church Trust firmly believe that the Hardacre method, combined with healthy exercise, domestic service training, and strict rules about personal conduct, will produce capable, demure, chaste, and modest young ladies who will be a credit to their parents and husbands in the years to come. With this holistic approach to the education of mind, body, and spirit, we will turn back the tide of moral decay in this great nation of ours.
